Why this jeweler won't do dainty
Why this jeweler won’t do dainty
What's the most popular style in jewelry right now? The dainty look. It's small, cute, and delicate. So you'd think a designer who is launching her first collection would be all over this trend, right? Absolutely. Not. For my decision-making, I needed to look no further than what I value and believe to be true about jewelry - it should be durable, creative, and stand the test of time as a keepsake.
First, dainty is delicate. Delicate is not durable. As a designer/jeweler, I strive to create pieces that are durable enough to withstand the activities of daily living, which I know require certain materials and tolerances that are incompatible with the dainty look. You can crush a dainty ring between your fingertips.
Furthermore, I like to be creative in my designs. Dainty pieces are pretty, but offer little in the way of allowing for a sharp departure from the mainstream or basic style. I can design classic pieces, but they will always have a modern and creative twist as well.
Most importantly, jewelry is meant to be cherished, as a keepsake, as a memento for a lifetime that might even be passed down to the next generation. I'd bet that pieces classified as dainty will not stand the test of time and last only as long as the trend they will be part of. Whatever your style and taste, please consider that you'd like your engagement ring to be one that, with proper care, outlasts your marriage.
